Screening
Current Turnaround Times:
Before we perform any service on your comics, we offer a screening service that determines whether or not anything should be done to your comic book. Our full service Pro-screen tier covers CGC graded comics for pressing, restoration candidates, restoration removal candidates, and any raw comics for which you’d prefer a specific grade estimate and restoration check. Our Pre-screen tier applies only to the submission of raw comics for pressing. Our No screen tier applies only to the submission of raw or CGC graded comics for pressing. If you are submitting a comic for restoration, recreation or removal service, a Pro-screen is mandatory. For pressing, the goal of many Classics Inc. submitters is to learn through multiple submissions how to screen their own comics for pressing and CGC grading. Within three to five submissions, one who studies their books submitted to us (whether pressed or rejected) will speedily ascend up the learning curve. The ultimate goal should be to submit pressing candidates through our No screen tier, which can save a client up to $5 per book and a week of turn time. No screen (offered only for pressing)If you are confident in your own screening ability for pressing, we suggest choosing No screen. Because there is no request for us to look at your comics, we put them in the pipeline for pressing immediately after we open your package. You only pay for the pressing itself, and turn time is cut by up to a week. A No screen can only be chosen for pressing submissions (raw or CGC). All restoration, recreation or removal submissions must receive a Pro-screen due to the nature of the work. Be aware that if you submit CGC graded comics for a No screen pressing, there is a greater possibility of downgrade because we are not checking it for you. We strongly suggest you have all CGC graded comics Pro-screened for pressing. Pre-Screen (offered only for pressing raw comics)For the first time ever, Classics Incorporated is offering the cheaper, more efficient Pre-screen to our clients. You simply assign a minimum grade in your work order, and we either pass or fail each book based on the grade you give. This service is strictly for raw comics submitted for pressing, and works best for larger orders. The cost per book is only $1 per modern comic (1975-present) and $2 per any comic pre-1975. This service cannot be used to screen CGC graded books, removal, recreation or restoration. For example, if you submit 20 comics with a 9.4 Pre-screen, we will only press those that we feel will achieve a 9.4 or higher grade from CGC after pressing. The cost to screen these 20 comics is only $20, as opposed to $100 you would pay for our traditional Pro-screen service. It is important to point out that this Pre-screen does not include a restoration check, nor will defect notes be assigned to any book in your work order. Because of this, if you are submitting high value books we suggest you opt for our traditional Pro-screen service. You will also save time using this service. We can Pre-screen comics considerably faster than Pro-screen, and we do not require your approval once the Pre-screens are finished; comics that pass your Pre-screen grade will begin pressing immediately. Pro-screen (for all services)Our Pro-screen service pertains to all services we offer. For pressing, our Pro-screen service checks for restoration, establishes a learning curve for CGC’s grading standards, and helps you understand what to look for in a pressing candidate. For restoration, the Pro-screen establishes the best course of action to take and provides an estimated grade, extent of restoration and turn time. For restoration removal, we establish feasibility and an estimated grade after the work has been performed. The cost is $5 per Pro-screen. Below are explanations for pressing, restoration removal, and restoration Pro-screens:
Downgrades and Missed RestorationThere is no guarantee a as to what grade a comic will get from CGC. For raw comics the big concern is missed restoration. For CGC graded comics, the concern is much less about restoration and more about maintaining the comic’s current CGC grade after pressing. While it is rare, there are occasions when CGC graded comics come back with a lower grade after pressing. This situation most often arises from CGC’s slight, periodic shifts in consideration of defects that are not easily quantifiable, such as foxing, tanning, sun or dust shadows, stains, rust, writing and fading. An example would be a comic that was graded a 9.0 in 2005, and has many pressable defects, but exhibits a tanned cover. We believe the book has a good chance at 9.2, but after pressing and submission the book receives an 8.5 due to CGC’s stricter stance on tanning in 2010. We closely follow CGC’s grading standards, and tend to be conservative towards these particular defects to avoid downgrades. If a book does happen to receive a lower grade, the book can be resubmitted in hopes of receiving the original grade, as CGC’s grades tighten and loosen over time. In this case we offer a free re-evaluation and repressing (if necessary) to help get the book back to its current CGC grade. Additional CGC fees will have to be paid for by the client. Keep in mind that this is a risk one must take when cracking books out of their CGC holders and pressing, and is something one will likely experience given enough submissions. Our expert eye is the best in the industry for spotting restoration before CGC does. In the rare event that restoration is missed we will review and remove the restoration for free, or if we deem that removal is not feasible, we will offer a credit for the cost of pressing that book. We do not cover subsequent CGC fees. Current Turnaround Times for ScreeningPre-screen: 5 business days, NO approval required Pro-screen: 5-10 business days, approval required
