CGC Grading Contest
graded comics gallery! Collectors and Dealers,
are you ready to truly test your grading mettle? For
the first time in the industry's history, you now
have that chance. Starting in 2009, Matt Nelson and
Richard Evans of Bedrock City will host official CGC
grading contests at several of the shows throughout
the year, including Wizard World Chicago, Baltimore,
New York Big Apple show, and others. The first
contest was held at the Philly Wizard World show on
June 19th and 20th, 2009.
The rules are easy: grade 30 comics in 30 minutes. Those 30 comics are then submitted to CGC for grading, with the results announced within two weeks. $250 and bragging rights goes to the 1st place winner. Each participant will have their own individual score and rank emailed to them as well, and those results are kept confidential. And the cost? If you are currently a subscriber of GPAnalysis.com, then your cost is nothing! GPAnalysis will cover the usual $10 entry fee for all members of their website, and will pay half of that fee for non-subscribers who participate.
Our next contest is scheduled for Baltimore Comic-Con October 10-11, and Wizard World Big Apple October 16-18, 2009. Please contact us with any questions.
The rules:
1. Each grader has 30 minutes to grade 30 comics.
2. No Magnifying glasses or any other tools allowed
during grading. Just the lamps we provide.
3. Every book is unrestored and has all pages and no coupons missing, so it is not necessary to count pages or check for restoration.
4. Additional defects found on any book will cause
its rejection.
5. 1st place receives $250.
6. Anyone affiliated with Classics Inc, Worldwide
Comics, Bedrock City or CGC cannot compete.
The scoring:
For Scoring, zero is a perfect score, with points
being added as follows:
grade variance = 1 point
page quality variance = 0.5 point
missed restoration or trimming = 5 points
extent of restoration variance = 1 point
type of restoration (A) or (P) variance = 0.5 point
If restoration chosen but none is present = 3 points
If no grade is chosen,
there is a 5 point penalty
If no page quality is
chosen, there is a 2 point penalty
Examples would be:
1. Your grade: 9.0 white pages
CGC grade: 8.0 off-white to white pages
Score for book = 2.5
2. Your grade: apparent 8.5 slight (P) white pages
CGC grade: apparent 7.0 moderate (P) off-white pages
Score for book: 4.5
3. Your grade: 9.4 off-white pages
CGC grade apparent 9.2 slight (P) white pages
Score for book = 6.5 |
